Steel Creek Ranch

Steel Creek Ranch is located in the storied Big Hole River Valley of southwestern Montana, just a few minutes drive from the town of Wisdom. The ranch is about one hour south of Butte and one and a half hours south of Missoula. At 2,011 acres, the ranch is a rare property combining productive agricultural ground with limitless recreational opportunities and spectacular views in all directions. A wide variety of fish, big game and other species are found in surprising numbers on and around the ranch.

Steel Creek is bordered on three sides by state and federal lands. The expansive Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest forms the ranch’s backyard. The ranch offers many recreational opportunities including hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and winter activities such as cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Westslope cutthroat trout and the rare Arctic grayling inhabit the creek. A fishing pond on the ranch is stocked with the native westslope cuts as well. Steel Creek is a veritable sportsman’s paradise in terms of big game. A wide variety of wildlife species inhabits the ranch and the adjoining National Forest including bear, wolves, mountain lion, elk, moose, antelope, deer and mountain goat.

The ranch’s aquatic resources are of particular conservation importance. Globally rare fluvial Arctic grayling spawn annually in Steel Creek and its tributaries, making the ranch and its riparian habitat critical to the future of this imperiled species. Since our acquisition we have been working with our conservation partners to protect and improve spawning habitat, manage critical water resources and promote the health of this important resource.
